Ma Kang’s photography Solo Show
Curator:Gu Rongjun
Opening Party: 19:30, Sep. 8th, 2007
Ma Kang is a good friend of mine, and a unique one. His camera is his tool; it is also his ship in his life’s journey, and it is inseparable from this explorer of society throughout it. His life is like a small canoe drifting with the current, and whether riding the crest of a wave or completely submerged, he will not fail to capture what interests him with a click of the shutter. He captures not only the object of his attention, but its environment, social condition, spirit, and soul.
Some photographers intricately plan their shots, preparing well in advance the object of their work, expending limitless film and memory space in pursuit of capturing the soul of their object, and yet they fail to grasp it. Ma Kang has the instinct: whether pursuing the rapid changes of Xinjiang, Shanghai, or Nanjing, or in a self-portrait, he is always able to capture the nature of his photograph’s object.
Wherever the tides of social development may carry him, his ability with the camera is his gift. As his friend for the last twelve years, I believe his pursuit of capturing spirit and soul will not fade, regardless of the rapid social changes surrounding him. It is my hope that his ability will allow him always to reveal to others the hidden soul of his objects, and let eastern and western viewers alike see the richness of the world around us through Ma Kang’s lens.
