Longtang, or Lane in English, is a major form of residential area in Shanghai where most local people (estimated well over 70 or more) live. These lane buildings first emerged in the foreign settlements in Shanghai in the 19th century, with an architectural style of traditional Southeast-China residential houses and a touch of western-style decoration. In the progress of fast-changing of the big city, more and more old appearing lane houses have been demolished day by day. So there appeared in Shanghai some middle-aged photographers who have been stubbornly focusing on these fast-vanishing scenes all over the city.
