March 21: Ellipse And Scene

How does scenografic design influence contemporary architecture?

Welcome to join Alberto Sanseverino’s lecture “Ellipse And Scene” at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on March 17 and discover it with us.

Alberto Sanseverino is a creative director and scenic designer from Italy with extensive worldwide professional experience.
Graduated from Brera, the academy of fine arts in Milan, Alberto is pursuing his passion for art in different fields. As a scenic designer, he has collaborated with famous directors to stage classic operas such as Carmen and La Boheme. As a creative director, he has worked with more than 40 brands such as Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Hennessy, Ferrari, Covestro, Piaget, Google, Microsoft and others.

Theatre and architecture have influenced each other since the very beginning. The scene that originally followed architectural rules of functionality becomes an independent discipline and scenic designers create new ways of designing space, inspiring future generations of architects and designers from the 60’s to contemporary architecture. Scenic space initially conceived for the theatre, also finds new ways to express its music, performance, architecture, lighting, fashion and lifestyle. With the influence of this revolution, architecture starts to move from the original function and subordination to the idea of centrality that metaphorically means subordination of the tradition to be elliptical, eccentric and variable, in other words, personal. By approaches of playful design, iconic building, spatiality, material and digital, an architect becomes a director not only for the building itself but for creating an experiential space for people- the role that was previously from scenic designers now pass to architects.

In 2011 Alberto staged the opera ‘The Elixir Of Love’ in Shanghai Oriental Art Center with the conduction of TANG Muhai. In 2012 his design for ‘Ducati Monster Diesel China Launch’ is quoted as case analysis in the book Creation And Design Of Events’. In 201 4 the design for ‘Jaguar Alive Technology’ won the Best Design Awards in Shanghai. He has been interviewed by international media like Le Monde, Amadeus, Il Giornale Della Musica and etc.

Whether it is a show, an event or a public space, his design takes you to an experiential journey where you become part of the fantastic story. He believes design is a way for people to communicate.
